Escribo este artículo a los lectores occidentales de todo el espectro político y social mientras la maquinaria de guerra israelí continúa la matanza de mi pueblo en Gaza. Hasta la fecha, más de 1.000 personas han sido asesinadas, la mitad de las cuales son mujeres y niños. La semana pasada el bombardeo a la escuela de la UNRWA (Agencia de ayuda a los refugiados de las Naciones Unidas) en el campamento de refugiados de Jabalya fue uno de los crímenes más despreciables que se puedan imaginar, mientras cientos de civiles debieron abandonar sus hogares en busca de refugio en la sede del organismo internacional sólo para resultar bombardeados sin piedad por Israel. Cuarenta y seis niños y mujeres fueron asesinados en ese odioso ataque y decenas de personas más resultaron heridas.

Evidentemente, la retirada de Israel de la Franja de Gaza en 2005 no puso fin a su ocupación ni, en consecuencia, a sus obligaciones internacionales como potencia ocupante. Siguió controlando y dominando nuestras fronteras por tierra, mar y aire. De hecho, las Naciones Unidas han confirmado que entre 2005 y 2008, el ejército israelí mató a casi 1.250 palestinos en Gaza, incluidos 222 niños. Durante la mayor parte de este período los cruces de frontera permanecieron cerrados, permitiendo sólo el acceso de una cantidad limitada de alimentos, combustible industrial, alimentos para animales y otros artículos esenciales.

A pesar de sus frenéticos esfuerzos por ocultarlo, la causa fundamental de la guerra criminal de Israel en Gaza es la elección de 2006, que dio la victoria a Hamás por una amplia mayoría. Lo que ocurrió después fue que Israel, junto con Estados Unidos y la Unión Europea, unieron sus fuerzas con el fin de anular la voluntad democrática del pueblo palestino. Decidieron, en primer lugar, revertir la decisión del pueblo a través de la obstrucción de la formación de un gobierno de unidad nacional, y a continuación convirtiendo en un infierno la vida del pueblo palestino por medio de la asfixia económica. El abyecto fracaso de todas estas maquinaciones, finalmente, ha conducido a esta guerra cruel. El objetivo de Israel es acallar todas las voces que expresan la voluntad de los palestinos para después imponer sus propios términos para una solución definitiva privándonos de nuestra tierra, nuestro derecho a Jerusalén como la capital de nuestro legítimo futuro Estado y del derecho de los refugiados palestinos a regresar a sus hogares.

En última instancia, el sitio completo en Gaza, que viola manifiestamente la Cuarta Convención de Ginebra, impide la entrada de la mayoría de los suministros médicos básicos para nuestros hospitales. Está prohibida la entrega de combustible y suministro de electricidad a nuestra población. Y encima de toda esta falta de humanidad, se nos niegan la comida y la libertad de movimientos, e incluso la posibilidad de acceder a tratamiento médico. Esto condujo a la muerte, que se podría haber evitado, de cientos de pacientes y a una espiral creciente de malnutrición entre los niños.

Los palestinos están horrorizados de que los miembros de la Unión Europea no vean este vergonzoso estado de sitio como una forma de agresión. A pesar de la abrumadora evidencia, afirman sin vergüenza que Hamás causó esta catástrofe al pueblo palestino al no renovar la tregua. Sin embargo, nos preguntamos, ¿Israel cumplió con los términos del alto al fuego mediado por Egipto en junio ? No lo hizo. El acuerdo estipulaba un levantamiento del sitio y el fin de los ataques en Cisjordania y la Franja de Gaza. A pesar de todo nuestro respeto a los términos del acuerdo, los israelíes continuaron con el asesinato de palestinos en Gaza, así como en Cisjordania, durante lo que fue conocido como el año de la paz de Anápolis.

Ninguna de las atrocidades cometidas contra de nuestras escuelas, universidades, mezquitas, ministerios e infraestructura civil, nos disuaden de la reivindicación de nuestros derechos nacionales. No cabe duda de que Israel podría destruir todos los edificios en la Franja de Gaza, pero nunca destruirá nuestra determinación o resolución de vivir con dignidad en nuestra tierra. Si agrupar a los civiles en un edificio para después bombardearlos o utilizar bombas de fósforo y misiles no son crímenes de guerra, ¿qué son ? ¿Cuántos tratados y convenios internacionales tiene que violar el Estado sionista de Israel antes de que le pidan cuentas ? No hay ni una ciudad en el mundo donde las personas libres y decentes no expresen su indignación por esta brutal opresión. Ni Palestina ni el mundo serán los mismos después de estos crímenes.

Sólo hay un camino a seguir, no hay otro. Nuestras condiciones para un nuevo alto el fuego son claras y simples. Israel debe poner fin a su guerra criminal y a la masacre de nuestro pueblo, levantar completa e incondicionalmente su asedio en la Franja de Gaza, abrir todos los pasos fronterizos y retirarse completamente de Gaza. Después de esto podríamos considerar futuras opciones. En última instancia, los palestinos son un pueblo que lucha por librarse de la ocupación, por el establecimiento de un Estado independiente con Jerusalén como su capital y el retorno de los refugiados a sus pueblos de los que fueron expulsados. Sea cual sea el coste, la continuación de las masacres de Israel no quebrantará nuestra voluntad ni nuestra aspiración a la libertad y la independencia.

I write this article to Western readers across the social and political spectrum as the Israeli war machine continues to massacre my people in Gaza. To date, almost 1,000 have been killed, nearly half of whom are women and children. Last week’s bombing of the UNRWA (UN Relief Works Agency) school in the Jabalya refugee camp was one of the most despicable crimes imaginable, as hundreds of civilians had abandoned their homes and sought refuge with the international agency only to be mercilessly shelled and bombed by Israel. Forty-six children and women were killed in that heinous attack while scores were injured.

Evidently, Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005 did not end its occupation nor, as a result, its international obligations as an occupying power. It continued to control and dominate our borders by land, sea and air. Indeed the UN has confirmed that between 2005 and 2008, the Israeli army killed nearly 1,250 Palestinians in Gaza, including 222 children. For most of that period the border crossings have remained effectively closed, with only limited quantities of food, industrial fuel, animal feed and a few other essential items, allowed in.

Despite its frantic efforts to conceal it, the root cause of Israel’s criminal war on Gaza is the elections of January 2006, which saw Hamas win by a substantial majority. What occurred next was that Israel alongside the United States and the European Union joined forces in an attempt to quash the democratic will of the Palestinian people. They set about reversing the decision first by obstructing the formation of a national unity government and then by making a living hell for the Palestinian people through economic strangulation. The abject failure of all these machinations finally led to this vicious war. Israel’s objective is to silence all voices that express the will of the Palestinian ; thereafter it would impose its own terms for a final settlement depriving us of our land, our right to Jerusalem as the rightful capital of our future state and the Palestinian refugees’ right to return to their homes.

Ultimately, the comprehensive siege on Gaza, which manifestly violated the Fourth Geneva Convention, prohibited the most basic medical supplies to our hospitals. It disallowed the delivery of fuel and supply of electricity to our population. And on top of all of this inhumanity, it denied them food and the freedom of movement, even to seek treatment. This led to the avoidable death of hundreds of patients and the spiralling rise of malnutrition among our children.

Palestinians are appalled that the members of the European Union do not view this obscene siege as a form of aggression. Despite the overwhelming evidence, they shamelessly assert that Hamas brought this catastrophe upon the Palestinian people because it did not renew the truce. Yet we ask, did Israel honour the terms of the ceasefire mediated by Egypt in June ? It did not. The agreement stipulated a lifting of the siege and an end to attacks in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. Despite our full compliance, the Israelis persisted in murdering Palestinians in Gaza as well as the West Bank during what became known as the year of the Annapolis peace.

None of the atrocities committed against our schools, universities, mosques, ministries and civil infra-structure would deter us in the pursuit of our national rights. Undoubtedly, Israel could demolish every building in the Gaza Strip but it would never shatter our determination or steadfastness to live in dignity on our land. Surely, if the gathering of civilians in a building only to then bomb it or the use of phosphorous bombs and missiles are not war crimes, then what is ? How many more international treaties and conventions must Zionist Israel breach before it is held accountable ? There is not a capital in the world today where free and decent people are not outraged by this brutal oppression. Neither Palestine nor the world would be the same after these crimes.

There is only one way forward and no other. Our condition for a new ceasefire is clear and simple. Israel must end its criminal war and slaughter of our people, lift completely and unconditionally its illegal siege of the Gaza Strip, open all our border crossings and completely withdraw from Gaza. After this we would consider future options. Ultimately, the Palestinians are a people struggling for freedom from occupation and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and the return of refugees to their villages from which they were expelled. Whatever the cost, the continuation of Israel’s massacres will neither break our will nor our aspiration for freedom and independence.
